Often overlooked, the terminal can be used to accomplish all sorts of fun stuff. Something that you may find handy, is the ability to Tweet using built in Mac OS X command line utilities. Now of course this is not a full featured Twitter client by any means, but if you are looking for potential geek “cred” this is a fun trick to demonstrate. Copy and paste the entire text in the grey boxes. When you paste it in your Terminal.app, it will show up as one single line. To display a list of tweets (replace osxdaily with a ...

We all have our favorite clients, but for some of us Twitter’s usefulness comes down to accessability. In this regard, it’s going to be hard to beat Ostrich. As @Zee puts it “it’s slick, but basic”, and that is likely the biggest selling point. Ostrich is the first built-in Twitter client that is designed solely to give you Twitter access no matter where you’re surfing on Safari. Yes, it is only for Safari. I loaded up Ostrich from the site, and gave it some time to load my Tweets. Once loaded, you just click on the Ostrich head and your Twitter feed will ...

We've seen a few cuckoo clock-inspired projects over the years, but one of the more obvious, a twitter clock, hasn't been among them -- until now, that is. Dubbed the Twitwee Clock, this contraption built by Haroon Baig relies on an Arduino (what else?) and an LCD to display incoming tweets, and an old fashioned mechanical cuckoo to notify you when a new one has arrived. That could obviously get on your nerves pretty quickly if you're simply watching your main Twitter feed, but the clock can also be setup to follow any twitter stream or search to give the ...

You can quickly post a tweet from the command line using the curl command, all you’ll need is your Twitter username and password. Launch the Terminal and type the following all on one line, replacing username and password with your own: curl -u username:password -d status="your status message here" http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml I came across this via MurphyMac who used the command to schedule Twitter updates while sleeping (seriously), using the curl command in conjunction with the sleep command. I’m not sure how practical tweeting while sleeping is, but the ability to post a quick update from the command line is pretty handy. If you’re so ...

Twitter: What started as an obscure and seemingly doomed social network has grown into a huge force on the web. Twitter is home to thriving communities of individuals forming lasting connections forged by 140 characters or less. An important fuel to this fire is the remarkably open Twitter API which has allowed developers to create a plethora of beautiful and incredibly convenient desktop applications that connect with every facet of the service. This article is dedicated to all you readers who, like me, are completely addicted to two things: Mac applications and Twitter. Note: All apps are free unless otherwise indicated. Native ...
I’ve spent a good time of today tweeting from Twittelator Pad [$4.99 - iTunes link], and I must say that I’m rather impressed. Twittelator Pad is best viewed in landscape. On the left hand side, your timeline is displayed in a nice traditional fashion and on the right hand side is where you can access all other features of Twittelator Pad. Choosing different tabs on the bottom has nice animations that are appealing to the eye. One of my favorite features of Twittelator Pad is that photos are embedded into your timeline and conversations. In most cases, pictures are plenty ...

Come iPad launch day, you’ll certainly have your pick of Twitter iPad apps. Now you can add popular desktop and iPhone app TweetDeck to that mix. While you can’t use it until tomorrow morning, TweetDeck for iPad [iTunes Link] is available now in the App Store and promises a super-sized Twitter experience that stays true to the application’s standby format. The application is free and includes two custom-built iPad interfaces — for distinct portrait and landscape experiences — that maximize column appearance and app functionality. Most of the same features from the desktop and iPhone version have made their way into the iPad ...

Even those who find social networking tool Twitter a vapid waste of time might be interested in this, a new role-playing title from Japanese publishers Marvelous that takes a person's Twitter feed and builds a game out of it. Called Followars, it builds a role-playing party for you out of whatever's on your Twitter feed: stuff like your hit points and attack stats determined by criteria like the number of tweets you've made and the number of people following you. In other words, think Pokemon. Only the monsters are you. Their stats, your Twitter trends. While it sounds a bit light, know it's ...

In the rush of iPad apps that we've been hearing about for the last few days, the genre that seems to be missing is Twitter clients. They're very popular in the iPhone App Store, so it's surprising that we haven't seen more screenshots or videos of Twitter apps for iPad. One of the first Twitter clients to be available on iPad (as of Saturday April 3rd) will be Twitepad, an app from InfoXenter that has already been approved by Apple. The larger screen of the iPad gave InfoXenter an opportunity to build in an integrated Web browser, support for multiple columns ...
